Reasonable prices lead to expansion of potato plantations

Potato prices have been moderate, encouraging farmers to extend their plantation acre, according to the Naungtaya Potato Association official.
G-2 potato seeds, produced from a research project on potato reproduction, in a collaboration between the Department of Agricultural Research in Aungban Township and the Naungtaya Potato Association, were distributed to farmers in Sinphyukyun, Taungni, Heho, Naungtaya, Pyintha, Htinakaung, Htamot, Hteyoon Nanpalin, Lwinywa, YeU, Kyaunggon and Theinpyon, and Thayaon in January.
“Potato prices have stayed at a moderate level so farmers are eager to expand their plantation acre. Potato prices extremely surged last month, which wasn’t helpful for both consumers and farmers. But the prices have been now moderate that is suitable for both parties,” he explained.
Potato prices tremendously rocketed late last year. However, the prices have returned to normal recently after potatoes from additional plantation acres were produced further, he added.
Potatoes grown in Sinphyukyun will be harvested in February and March, so the production will peak from March to May. — MT/ZS
