Former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were gunned down earlier this month in what authorities say was a politically motivated killing, will lie in state in the state Capitol Rotunda on Friday, a day ahead of their funeral, Gov. Tim Walz announced Tuesday.
Hortman will be the first woman and one of fewer than 20 Minnesotans accorded the honor.
The Hortmans' golden retriever, Gilbert, who was seriously wounded in the attack and later had to be euthanized, will also lie in state with the couple.

On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to abortion that had been the law nationwide for almost 50 years.
The court ruled 5-4, in an opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito, who called Roe "egregiously wrong from the start." At the same time, the court voted 6-3 to uphold a Mississippi law that bans abortions after 15 weeks, with very few medical exceptions.
A grassroots advocacy organization launched a national boycott of McDonald's on Tuesday, protesting the fast-food giant's recent rollback of DEI initiatives and other corporate practices.
In its January announcement, McDonald's emphasized inclusion as one of its "core values" while announcing changes to its diversity programs, a move that came shortly after President Trump's executive orders dismantling federal DEI programs.
In a statement to ABC News, McDonald's Corporation defended its practices, saying the company's "commitment to inclusion remains steadfast."
