Pine martens are active throughout the year in Yellowstone. In winter, their large paws enable them to walk on top of deep snow. Their slender bodies allow them to move through tunnels underneath the snow in search of prey. As temperatures drop, they do most of their hunting for only a few hours in the warmest part of the day and will rest or den in hollow trees or stumps, or in excavations under tree roots.
